Pickerel
Pickerel is a delicious, white and flaky freshwater fish. Its abundance in our waters means you can enjoy pickerel as often as you like. Succulent pickerel rivals salmon as Canada’s best fish. Whether you catch one yourself or purchase pickerel from the store, this fish is a nutritious, high-protein choice with a delicious light flavour. Pickerel is low in harmful compounds such as heavy metals and pesticides. Pickerel is also in healthy numbers across Canada, meaning you can enjoy a good pickerel dinner any night of the week and feel good about it!
Bass
Bass are not one type of fish, but includes a number of members of the perch family, both salt water and fresh fish. The name comes from an early English word ‘bars’ for Perch, but today is used for lots of fish including striped, Australian, white, black and spotted bass and several more. The French call them Loup, the Dutch Zeebaars and Italians eat Spigola. In fact there are names in many languages, so popular is this meaty fish.
Muskie
Muskies go by many names: muskie, musky, maskinonge, muskallonge, mascalonge, ‘lunge, silver muskellunge, Great Lakes muskellunge and sometimes even just “jack”. Derived from the Algonquin word maskinonge, the name can mean deformed pike (mashk kinonge), ugly fish (mas kinonge), and large pike (mas Kenosha). One of the cold-water species, the muskellunge can be found lurking in aquatic plants at the sides of channels, or by drop-offs from rock or sand bars and along weed beds. Spawning occurs in the spring after ice break-up, along marshy shorelines.
